Having recently spent a lot of time on developing AJAX and XHTML sites for our independent escort clients we have now completed our first Flash based site (http://www.helen-jameson.com) scripted completely in ActionScript 3 (AS3).
The overhead of moving to the new more complete programming language which is AS3 has been quite heavy, basically having to relearn some 70% of the coding practices previously used. The main differences being a more Object orientated approach, the new display list to control movie depths and a whole series of new classes to control text formatting and asset loading.
The rewards however are many, improved functionality and speed in the Flash player V10 (building on the vast improvements in player 9), more powerful and clearer scripting and functions, the move to reusable classes held outside of the file and better video and sound support.
Expect to see new sites designed to exploit the new features of AS3 over the next few months. Meanwhile we would recommend an upgrade to Flash Player 10 if you have not already done so. Free download available from http://www.adobe.com.
