Site outage posted: 28 06 07
A short post to explain our server down time yesterday, below is a summary of a mail received from our service providers yesterday in respect of the problem…
As noted yesterday we suffered a serious and complete break in network traffic due to fibre infrastructure problems.
We have two Fibre connections from the data centre in Glasgow which provides redundant links out of the building to our main connectivity partners in London
On Monday, the West coast link was powered down after the facility it was housed in started taking on water due to heavy flooding. This facility is in Sheffield, say no more, and yesterday at 12.15pm, the East cost line failed with an as yet unspecified cable break in Wolverhampton.
I cannot stress how unusual this set of circumstances is. We have all seen news coverage of the flooding in Sheffield and of how unusual this scenario is. Add to this the line break in a second redundant fibre line and you truly have a disaster scenario.
We will of course be looking at ways of minimising this type of issue in the past however I must stress that we already provide two distinct fibre paths, regardless of them both coming from the same provider. We are aware that several other providers were affected by yesterdays problems including Pipex, Donhost, Star Internet and many others.
Some online press coverage includes the Register
Once again please accept our apologies for the issues experienced yesterday.

Just a quick note, we have updated the photography section to showcase some of the photographers we work with. This we hope will allow clients to more easily make a choice when choosing a photographer.
Also new is the AJAX and XML powered gallery used in this section, a first for us which we believe will usher in a whole host of elements to enhance the site visitors viewing experience.
Browser wars posted: 12 06 07
As if Firefox had not taken a substantial market share from Microsoft IE on the windows platform Apple has just made its Safari browser available in Beta for Vista and XP wndows based machines.
To quote Apple
“Blazing performance. The fastest web browser on any platform, Safari loads pages up to 2 times faster than Internet Explorer 7 and up to 1.6 times faster than Firefox 2 and it executes JavaScript up to 2.8 times faster than Internet Explorer 7 and up to 1.6 times faster than Firefox 2.
What does all that mean for you? Less time loading pages and more time enjoying them.”
I downloaded it last night and have run a few tests, so far even in Beta it seems to live up to its promise. Not yet set as default browser (currently Firefox) but can see it replacing FF on th Windows based machines here. We will continue to test sites on Windows with Firefox IE and Opera and of course now Safari as well as Safari on the Apple platform. As always we try to get sites as compliant and cross browser compatible as possible.
if you are interested in Safari grab it Here
Comings and Goings posted: 11 06 07
Well the main going is Tara has left to pursue other interests so the photography section will be completely overhauled in the next day or so, expect to see much more information and choice. The departure has left me working to catch up with stuff that needs doing but never fear as always it will be done and as quickly as ever, but I would like to thank all for their patience where it has been needed.
Vivienne.co.uk has been taken off line while she takes a break and hotlizzy.com has been removed from all our links and portfolio.
Well thats the goings, the portfolio and client list will show you that the comings are still, well, coming. Sites for several new agencies and parlours, as well as new independents. New sites coming soon for Charlotte in Bristol and Sylvia (Nymphoservice) in London. We are also developing a new look for Blue Monday which will once again (hopefully) set the standard as their first Flash based one did. A new directory for the South West London area is also in the pipeline, as are other projects.
Meanwhile we wish a warm welcome to Crystal, Hazel and all our other new clients, thank you as always for choosing 69Design
